Pre-Conference Workshop: DEI Initiatives for Perioperative Nursing Workforce Development
Mark your calendars! Whitman Partners is hosting two panel discussions at the pre-conference workshop event at the 2022 OR Manager Conference on Sunday, October 16, in Denver, CO, at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center. Hear BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ perioperative leaders explore the unique challenges and benefits of an inclusive operating room.
Despite recent strides made in equity hiring, representation of BIPOC nurses still lags in the healthcare industry, particularly in the OR. For this workshop, BIPOC leaders will discuss how mentoring, career recognition, and giving BIPOC leaders more opportunities to share their perspective and knowledge serves the local community, perioperative industry, and individual patient experience in many ways.
Increasingly, organizations are celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and recognizing the value these individuals bring to their teams. However, they still face broad discrimination. In recognition of Pride Month last June, we sent a survey to Directors of Surgical Services on how ORs (and the facilities they reside in) approach LGBTQIA+ diversity and inclusion regarding staff and patient care. Almost 90% said their facilities do not offer gender reassignment surgeries, and none offer transgender advocacy programs to support patients.
Creating a genuinely inclusive culture means taking more significant action and developing thoughtful, informed policies. Whitman Partners is committed to creating spaces to discuss these issues with sensitivity and respect.
